Mending Forward: modern applications for historical mending techniques
Before Amazon Prime and fast fashion what you owned had to last. Historically, individuals repaired and reworked the things they owned over and over again, passing down practical skills from generation to generation. Many of these artifacts and textiles bear the marks of mending as testimony to their value and usefulness.
In this seminar-style presentation, Elizabeth will use a combination of mended artifacts and photographs to illustrate the importance and value of repair, especially in light of the impact society has on the environment. She will also explain specific mending techniques to participants and give practical ideas on how to apply what she’s learned from studying historical repairs to our modern lives and objects.
